One Rosemary Lane, one of the first cottages from the trailblazing Moody Sisters, is a cherished piece of Santa Barbara history. Set on a quiet cul-de-sac in Montecito’s Eucalyptus Hill neighborhood, the walled and gated 2-bedroom, 1½-bath cottage reflects the signature storybook charm and whimsical, human-scaled design that the sisters were known for.
Tucked into a collection of their beloved cottages along Rosemary Lane, the residence remains a testament to the creative vision of the four free-spirited Moody Sisters, who left behind a legacy of nearly three dozen of these charming “pixie homes” throughout Santa Barbara and Montecito.
Designed with an effortless flow, the home unfolds with a series of inviting spaces, where Douglas Fir floors and wood paneled walls glow with warmth, and salvaged doors and windows add layers of history. Around every turn, nooks and crannies create a sense of discovery, each one a treasure in its own right.

With about 35 homes in Santa Barbara and Montecito, the Moody Sisters — led by Harriett and Mildred — crafted some of the region’s most enchanting cottages. Their signature "fairy-tale" style, often described as “Hansel and Gretel” or “Alice in Wonderland,” drew inspiration from English country cottages, featuring steeply pitched roofs, leaded glass windows, and salvaged materials.
Harriett, trained in architecture and engineering, began designing homes in the 1930s, starting with six cottages on Periwinkle Lane. Mildred, with a background in art and design, added whimsical interior details like hand-painted flowers and birds. Their work flourished during the Great Depression, when smaller, efficient homes were in demand.
The sisters’ cottages, known for their craftsmanship and charm, remain highly sought-after today, preserving a unique chapter of Santa Barbara’s architectural history.
