There’s a great luxury in staying in a home long enough for it to become part of your story — the memories, the milestones, the life lived there.

Land. Privacy. Mature gardens. Beautiful architecture. Room for family and friends. These are the things that give a home character, are difficult to re-create and only become more valuable to us with time.

In Montecito, homeowners have always acquired neighboring properties or additional acreage for privacy, views, family, or simply more control over what surrounds them. And now there’s a name for it: “land-maxing.”

Perhaps the more interesting part of this trend is what it says about our homes.

The longer we live in them, the more they become part of who we are — the setting and backdrop to our lives. And when you have something that is difficult to replicate, staying put becomes the ultimate luxury.

What will feel special ten years from now might not be the newest finish or the latest technology. It’s what can’t easily be replaced — the space, beauty, quiet, privacy, and home that has become more meaningful with time.

One of the clearest signs of an exceptional property isn’t just how quickly someone wants to buy it. It’s how difficult it becomes to imagine ever replacing it.

September in Santa Barbara

Summer lingers, but the social calendar is shifting into fall. From evenings at Lotusland and Sunday polo to a packed month at the Bowl, September brings plenty of reasons to get out and enjoy Santa Barbara.

• Sept. 1 — Roger Daltrey | Lobero Theatre
• Sept. 3 — 1st Thursday | Downtown Santa Barbara, 5:00-8:00PM - Galleries, exhibitions, live music and evening events throughout downtown.
• Sept. 5–7 — Santa Barbara Studio Artists Open Studios Tour - Labor Day weekend brings one of the Central Coast’s largest open-studio events, with local artists opening their working spaces to the public.
• Sept. 5 — Twilight Garden Walk | Lotusland, Montecito 4:30–6:30 PM. - An evening in the gardens with live music and a picnic on the Great Lawn.
• Every Sunday - Polo at Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club - Spend Sunday afternoon fieldside for an afternoon of polo, with gates opening at noon and matches beginning at 3:30 PM.
• Sept. 11 — Candlelight: Tribute to Fleetwood Mac | Music Academy of the West, Montecito
• Sept. 12–13 — Santana | Santa Barbara Bowl
• Sept. 12–13 — Santa Barbara Sea Glass & Ocean Arts Festival - A weekend devoted to sea glass, coastal art, jewelry and ocean-inspired makers at Earl Warren Showgrounds.
• Sept. 18 — Earth, Wind & Fire | Santa Barbara Bowl
• Sept. 20 — Brandi Carlile | Santa Barbara Bowl
• Sept. 25 — Spirit Garden with PALMA Colectiva | Lotusland, Montecito
  1–5 PM. - Adults-only event in the gardens and one of Lotusland’s special September programs.
• Sept. 25 — Alabama Shakes | Santa Barbara Bowl
• Sept. 26–27 — Goleta Lemon Festival - A classic local fall weekend with food, entertainment, games, a classic car show and family activities at Girsh Park.
