The Company We Keep

What does it take to build something extraordinary?
A brilliant idea? The right people? A little luck?
In 1744, a London bookseller named Samuel Baker auctioned off a library of books. That was the very first Sotheby’s sale.
More than two centuries later, in 1976, someone at Sotheby’s had a thought: We sell the art. Why not sell the walls it hangs on? And Sotheby’s International Realty was born.
Last week, we joined more than 2,700 real estate professionals from around the world in San Francisco to celebrate 50 years of Sotheby’s International Realty.
Different countries. Different markets. Different languages. All united by an uncompromising commitment to innovation, excellence, and the highest standards of personal service.
San Francisco’s iconic City Hall knows how to throw a party. Black ties, evening gowns and that magnificent dome overhead.
And if there’s one thing real estate agents love to do, it’s talk. And in a room like this, those conversations reach around the world.
A name passed between friends. A call across continents. A quiet “I know someone you should meet.”
Markets change. Good taste, trust and human connection endure.
Fifty years later, the company you keep still matters most.

A Once in a Lifetime Coastal Legacy
Rancho Dos Pueblos | $39,750,000
An exclusive beach at the heart of an ever-evolving landscape, Rancho Dos Pueblos is 214 acres shaped by history, vision, and the rhythm of the Pacific. Once home to Chumash villages, later a storied cattle ranch, a haven for champion racehorses, a thriving agricultural gem, and an institute of cultural enrichment, this land has long been a place of possibility.
