The Chumash, original inhabitants of the Gaviota Coast, occupied two villages — Mikiw and Kuyamu — atop the bluffs on either side of what is now Dos Pueblos Creek. Historical accounts describe Chumash canoes paddling out to trade fish and chia sage flour for textiles and Venetian beads, though Cabrillo declined invitations to come ashore and departed the following morning.
More than two centuries later, Spanish expeditions arrived as part of King Carlos III’s effort to establish missions, presidios, and settlements across Alta California.
