An exclusive beach at the heart of an ever-evolving landscape, Rancho Dos Pueblos is 214 acres shaped by history, vision, and the rhythm of the Pacific. Rancho Dos Pueblos is a land of abundance, producing some of California’s finest harvests. A revitalization of its 30 acres of avocado orchards and 25 acres of cherimoya trees, alongside sustainable farming, could create an agrotourism experience.
A rare collection of ranch accommodations and support facilities, including multiple residences, mobile homes, a dormitory, additional apartments, historic barns, horse stables, multiple garages, and a machine shop, all contributing to the scale, versatility, and legacy of Rancho Dos Pueblos.
To own Rancho Dos Pueblos is to inherit a story — one written by the tides, the trees, and the generations who have walked this land before.
The Chumash, original inhabitants of the Gaviota Coast, occupied two villages — Mikiw and Kuyamu — atop the bluffs on either side of what is now Dos Pueblos Creek. On October 16, 1542, two ships commanded by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo anchored offshore just weeks after his arrival in California. Historical accounts describe Chumash canoes paddling out to trade fish and chia sage flour for textiles and Venetian beads, though Cabrillo declined invitations to come ashore and departed the following morning.
More than two centuries later, Spanish expeditions arrived as part of King Carlos III’s effort to establish missions, presidios, and settlements across Alta California. Rancho Dos Pueblos was eventually granted to Nicholas Den, the first medical doctor in Santa Barbara, and over generations evolved through a remarkable succession of owners and uses — from cattle ranching and oil production to John Williams’ vision of recreating Naples, Italy, Herbert Wylie’s reconstruction of Casa Grande, Samuel Mosher’s celebrated orchid cultivation, and Rudolf Schulte’s stewardship of the ranch as a family compound. Today, Dos Pueblos Institute continues that legacy through conservation, restoration, sustainable agriculture, research, and education.
A world of its own, this is a place of staggering beauty, limitless opportunity, and profound responsibility. For those who seek meaning, legacy, and purpose, Rancho Dos Pueblos awaits.
